Commitment (and a tribute to NYC)

Before a new chapter is begun, the old one has to be finished” (P.Coelho).

It took some time to prepare for the next step. But it wasn’t until last Monday (Sep, 19) that I was able to commit to the new track. This was the last day I had classes or supervising obligations at New York College (NYC). Closing a chapter is sad, but becomes easier if this chapter includes warm feelings and beautiful memories (see the tribute below).

So, now there is plenty of time to commit on the new chapter. A number of SaaS applications are under development and going to be announced soon. At the same time we are developing a web app were artists and craftsmen will be able to present their work portfolios for free. This application (the art gallery) is actually a testing platform where colleagues are introduced to the framework and the working environment.

The Art Gallery is expected to launch in Nov. 2011. We believe that the core of the first SaaS application will be ready for use at approximately the same time. It will have to do with surveys and statistics. More details will be published here as we proceed.

A Tribute to NYC

I’ve been teaching at NYC since Sep, 2001. Ten years of a valuable and exciting experience. During these years I had the chance to meet excellent students and valuable colleagues. The environment of the college encouraged my efforts and helped me feel like a part of the team. Besides ups, there were downs as well, but they were rare and few, and in any case not worth mentioning here. Throughout teaching I had the chance to improve myself, learn new things, and experiment with tools and technologies, during the research projects, that will be valuable during this new chapter of my life.

The most rewarding thing, though, is the feedback from old graduates who are successful in their careers and the feeling that there might be a tiny contribution of my efforts in that.

Time management

There is time enough for everything in the course of the day, if you do but one thing at once, but there is not time enough in the year, if you will do two things at a time.” Lord Chesterfield, letter to his son, 1740s

As a freelancer or startup owner you are wearing a lot of hats and many tasks are awaiting for you to eat up your time. Multi-tasking is difficult and frequently leads to disappointment and finally, procrastination. Continue reading →

Building the team

Software development is usually a team process even for sole proprietorship startups. Yet, it’s not very wise to build a team before you actually have a vision and the ability to pay the checks … Moreover, Fried and Heinemeier (of 37signals) claim that you should “never hire anyone to do a job until you’ve tried to do it yourself first” – a great piece of advice.

Version Control (go back in time)

Research on Version Control hosting is over. We will finally go with RepositoryHosting which provides a single low cost – no frills plan, and supports Subversion (SVN), Mercurial, and Git repositories! Mercurial and Git provide better suport for branching, so we are going to consider adopting them. Trac issue tracking system is also provided. Continue reading →

On a new route

I’m changing route these days and move forward to the Software as a Service (SaaS) area. A few ideas emerged during the previous years of practice and teaching and are going to be implemented. It took some time to reach this point (initial idea was around summer 2008) because it wasn’t easy to abandon previous work and involvement.  Continue reading →
